Dinan is a magnificent old
city of timbered houses and cobbled streets that
rise from its old port to the fortification above.
With its multitude of shops, galleries,
restaurants, and sidewalk cafés, Dinan is
fun to explore. In search of a hotel that would
allow more than an afternoon visit, I was thrilled
to happen upon the comfortable and charming
d'Avaugour. Set on the main road within steps of
the heart of the cobbled old quarter, this is a
small, city, three-star hotel with character. You
enter off the street into an attractive lobby with
a sitting area and exposed beams.

A modern bar is accessed
off the entry or through another entrance off the
street. With lots of plans and dreams, Monsieur
Caron, who has been director of some of Paris's
finest hotels, has modernized and revamped
bathrooms and redecorated guestrooms. One of the
hotel's greatest features is its wonderful garden,
which extends out back. Here guests can enjoy
breakfast on the terrace, wander the paths, and
enjoy unobstructed views of Dinan's castle and a
panoramic outlook over the countryside.
