A five star Belle
Époque hotel right in front of the lago
Maggiore facing the beautiful "Iles des Borromees"
completely refurbished in the 90's, The structure
is divided in three wings: Stresa, Impero and
Berano. This last one houses the junior suites and
suites which are all spacious and lavishly
decorated. All rooms in this hotel are very nice.
As a general policy, the hotel offers free upgrades
to all arriving guests (depending on availability).
The hotel is one of the "Locali Storici d'Italia,"
(historical houses operating as hotel for more than
a 100 years).

This 172 room hotel is also very
well equipped for seminars, with beautiful salons
dedicated just to that, so it is almost impossible
for hotel guests to feel unease with the presence
of a seminar in the hotel. You can see the
Borromean Islands from many rooms, which are
furnished in an Italian/French Empire style,
including rich ormolu, burnished hardwoods, plush
carpets, and pastel colors. The bathrooms look as
if every quarry in Italy were scoured for matched
marble.

The hotel opened in 1863,
attracting titled notables and guests such as J. P.
Morgan. Hemingway sent the hero of A Farewell to
Arms here to escape World War I. The elegant public
rooms, with two-tone ornate plasterwork and crystal
chandeliers, once hosted a top-level meeting among
the heads of state of Italy, Great Britain, and
France in an attempt to stave off World War II.
Another feature is the beauty and health center,
one of the best equipped one can find. And last but
not least, the hotel also operates a 27-room
Residenza in a separate building, where the prices
are 20% lower and the rooms are decorated in a
modern style. The staff can help you arrange for
golf and watersports.
