Removed from main roads and the highly
trafficked towns along Sicily's coast, small
villages can still be found that appear to have
been frozen in time. The tiny hamlet of Gangi,
which lies in the shadow of the Madonie mountain
range, is such a place. Founded by Benedictine
monks as the Abbey of Our Lady of the Annunciation
in 1363, the country inn now known as Tenuta
Gangivecchio has been &endash; since 1856 - the
property of the Tornabene Family, who will welcome
you in the warm spirit of traditional hospitality.
An estate steeped in history, the family
established a well-known restaurant in the western
wing of the old abbey in 1978 and in 1992 opened an
inn with another restaurant in the park of the
ex-monastery. Situated between Catania &
Palermo, not far from Cefalu, the historic center
of town remains well preserved, while less
picturesque modern construction dominates the scene
beyond the town walls.

With 8 rooms and 1 suite, the standard of
comfort at the Tenuta Gangivecchio trumps the
décor, which is generally rustic and a bit
haphazard. However the terraces all offer fine
views over the mountains, the charming old cloister
and the monastery garden. Each room comes with
private bathroom, a queen-sized [and
single] bed, heating, TV and telephone. The
suite is located in an independent 19th century
stone cottage. Meals are served to guests in a
dining room on the ground floor of the Inn and
there is a bar in the restaurant as well as a cozy
sitting room with fireplace. A swimming pool is at
your disposal and the hotel also has a conference
room. The property produces its own vegetables,
extra-virgin olive oil, fresh fruits, eggs, milk
and cheese. All of these fresh products make their
way into the kitchen of the property's restaurants,
where guests can sample local specialties and
typical Sicilian cuisine. Signora Wanda and her
daughter co-authored a cookbook, which won the
James Beard award for the best Italian cookbook in
1997. Despite the semi-remote location, there is
much to see in the area and the food itself is
worth the trip.
