This extraordinary island, this
unique melting pot of civilization, is steeped in
history and ancient culture. Here Phoenician,
Greek, Roman, Norman and Arab influences rubbed
shoulders with Renaissance and Baroque influences
to make Sicily the Mediterranean's cultural
treasure house par excellence. Sicily is also
famous for its natural attractions: a land of
fabulous beaches and coastlines, unending citrus
and olive groves and the mysterious volcano Etna,
all add to Sicily's charm. Gastronomically, Sicily
is famous for its refined and tangy dishes washed
down with strong reds and delicate white
wines.

Villa Carruba.
is on the East coast of Sicily, half way between
Catania and Taormina (a twenty-minute drive). This
attractive house nestles in a verdant citrus valley
reaching down from the slopes of Mount Etna to the
Ionian sea. The rustic charm of the architecture
strikes a perfect harmony with the exceptional
rural setting &endash; in fact "Villa Carruba" is
surrounded by grounds stretching over more than 170
acres. Its beautiful garden and wide terraces are
adorned with Mediterranean herbs and terracotta
pots overflowing with lemons, palms and olive
plants. The estate actually consists of two houses:
"Villa Carruba" which has four double bedrooms, and
"Villa Riposto" famous for its impressive terraces,
spacious living areas and wonderful, fully equipped
kitchen in which the owner proudly organizes
cooking classes. Usually both properties can be
rented individually though the owner does prefer to
let them together during the high season. The
rental also includes the cost of a full time
domestic staff: two maids and a cook.

L'Edera A.
There, in the countryside, five minutes drive out
of the charming township of Trecastagni - half-way
between Catania and Taormina - stands "L'Edera"
(The Ivy House). Recently planned and designed by a
famous French architect, this superb holiday home
combines natural colours and volcanic stones from
nearby Mount Etna to truly masterful effect.
Indeed, first-time visitors often assume the
property is a typical 18th or 19th-century manor
house! "L'Edera", which as its name suggests, is
romantically draped in ivy, is surrounded by two
acres of superb, semi-tropical garden. Shade is
provided by a stunning variety of flora including
aromatic lemon and fig trees. To the rear of the
kitchen, there is a covered pergola equipped with
both oven and barbecue &endash; perfect for
al-fresco dining. At the front of the house, the
dining and living rooms give on to a large terrace
&endash; a cool retreat from the afternoon sun.
This property has warm, terracotta flooring
throughout; it is comfortably furnished and
decorated in exquisite Sicilian style.
