Insediamento Greco del VII sec. a. c. , situato nei pressi del fiume Selinos ( attuale Modione) da cui il nome della potente città fondata da una colonia di Greci provenienti da Megara Hyblea In perenne conflitto con il popolo degli Elimi che ebbe in Segesta uno dei centri più significativi fù capace di opporsi per lungo tempo anche a Cartagine, che infine venuta in soccorso agli Elimi di Segesta , pose l'assedio a Selinunte nel 409 a. c. che culminò nella sua devastazione. Nell 'oscuro periodo Medioevale si persero anche le memorie dell' antica città greca e solo nella seconda metà del XVI sec. Venne riscoperta da Tommaso Fazello. Da pochi anni si è provveduto a fare nascere il famoso Parco Archeologico che per vastità e contenuti risulta uno dei più grandi giacimenti di cultura greca oggi presenti al mondo. |
