The old railway station of Torre del Compte,
hidden away in the valley below the village, has
recently been given a new lease of life thanks to
the dynamism of Pilar and José María
who were convinced that rural tourism and modern
design could be happy bedfellows. At the end of the
road cutting down from the village a highly
original ochre-and-Bordeaux-coloured hotel awaits
you. It's about designer furniture, a bold use of
glass and metal, and state-of-the-art bathrooms and
beds, rather than rustic-style nostalgia. And it
works wonderfully. Each bedroom's colour and
decoration are inspired by a different town in
Spain; thus Madrid is about classical elegance,
Mérida inspired by Roman motifs, Valencia's
whites and blues evoke the Mediterranean. All
fittings and furnishings are top of the range
throughout the hotel, from taps to beds to sofas.
Relax in a light, airy reading room, dine on
innovative and beautifully presented 'contemporary
Mediterranean' food then head out (perhaps along
the old railway track, by bike) to discover the
wilderness and wonder of this part of Spain.
