In an otherwise perfect hotel, the Palacete de Penalba in the Asturias region of Spain, there is no elevator -- a key issue for us, stroller-pushing tourists. But we quickly forgave the hotel designers when, as we were going downstairs for breakfast the first morning of our visit, our nine-year-old son paused somewhere between the third and second floor, looked around at the ornate chandeliers, the exquisite tapestries and the golden-hued walls, and declared, "Mom, I feel rich."Just like a child to put into words exactly what the adults were thinking but didn't dare say out loud.The Palacete de Penalba is in the town of Figueras del Mar, which straddles the boundary between Asturias and Galicia on Spain's northern coastline. |

Figueras was one of the final stops in a week-long trip our family took last August from Santander, in Cantabria, to Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, to discover the architectural legacy of the Indianos, Indianos Spanish men who emigrated to the Americas in the late 19th century and the early years of the 20th century, and who, having made fortunes in places like Argentina, Mexico, Cuba and even Tampa, Fla., returned to their hometowns to build ostentatious mansions, as well as churches, hospitals and schools. They were called Indianos because Spaniards referred to America as the Indias. |

Avelino Gutiérrez, propietario de un afamado restaurante en la misma localidad, pero al borde de la ría, regenta desde hace años este depurado palacete modernista, en el centro de un jardín diseñado por Cecilio Rodríguez. Su diseño fue encargado en 1912 a un discípulo de Gaudí, que concluyó un proyecto de edificio art nouveau inédito en estas latitudes. Gran parte del decorado original, como los tapices y los jarrones, se conserva hasta tal punto que el edificio completo ha sido declarado monumento artístico. |

De hecho, el huésped tiene a veces la sensación de estar en un museo, con las escaleras de entrada retorcidas, los balcones ovalados, el atrio de vidrio y azulejos y los dormitorios abovedados a semejanza de algunas conocidas casas de Barcelona. Eso sí, un tanto kitsch. |

Las concienzudas reformas realizadas por los propietarios lo han dejado en saludable estado de revista, sin rastro de humedades y con un nuevo dormitorio en la torre, bajo la cúpula, además del cuidado jardín de estilo inglés, con vistas a la ría de Ribadeo. |
