Guests who wish to stay
overnight at Castello Il Palagio will be
accommodated at Borgo Montefolchi, situated on top
of a hill 3 minutes drive from the castle. From the
Borgo Montefolchi you can enjoy a wonderful view
which on clear days embraces the countryside all
the way to the Appennine mountain range. The
village was once a Roman castrum, then a
Longobardic castle. It was originally an Etruscan
village, as the 7th century B.C. findings have
demonstrated. The holiday home is a portion of the
farmhouse that looks on its private garden with its
own "aia" (threshing-floor) where you can enjoy the
spectacular sunsets while dining outdoors. The
entrance from the garden leads up the stairs to a
large kitchen with a large old fireplace. The rooms
of the house have been tastefully restored with
care for all modern conveniences, but maintaining
the original structure of the "casa colonica", in
fact roofing-tiles are typical of the tuscan
tradition.

Montefolchi is located on
a hill 430 meters above see level with a view open
on all sides, so it is not sheltered from the wind.
You will have magic moments here, during a starry
moonlit night or at sunset. On
June 24 you can even see the traditional fireworks
display for the patron saint of Florence,
Saint Giovanni. On August 13 you can enjoy
thefireworks in San Casciano. If you are interested
we can organise a rustic or an elegant dinner for
you in Montefolchi: the garden is ideal
placing tables with different kinds of cheese,
salami and ham; we can use the old wood ovens to
bake rustic bread and cakes; grill in the open,
maybe with the supervision of the "kings" of the
T-bone steak Mr. Falorni and Mr. Cecchini; we can
use old kegs filled with ice cubes for the bottles
of sparkling wine..

...we can do this and many
other things! The Castle Il Palagio building, which
originally had only one storey, has undergone many
changes. In ancient times, the tower, which has a
square base, used to be lower and without any
battlements (this was a feature of many other
castles of the Chianti area). The present
battlement was added during restoration in
1910. From the XVIth century Il
Palagio obtained many works of art. Many
portraits of Florentine nobles, pictures with
hunting or battle scenes, terracotta from the
school of Della Robbia were brought to Palagio to
adorn the splendid halls.

The gothic chapel is fully
decorated and at the centre there is a
plaster sculpture dipicting the Madonna with
Child. The original was kept
here until the beginning of the 20th century,
when it was given to the Bargello Museum in
Florence. Castle Il Palagio is the perfect place
for a wedding party, a business dinner or meeting
or a medieval banquet: it's a wonderful place that
is truely unique in all of Tuscany. The
beautiful gothic chapel looks on to the courtyard
and it's also possible to use it for weddings,
because it's still consecrated. The building will
be completely at our guest's disposal, for two
hundred people as well as for only ten people. All
around the castle there is a wonderful garden,
which can be the ideal place for cocktails,
aperitifs and also photo shoots. Il Palagio is not
a restaurant, it's an historical building, where
catering by some of the best hand picked local
chefs can be done by prior arrangement.

We can guarantee the
highest professionalism and quality. Their cooking
can compete with that of the most famous
restaurants in all Italy. The kitchen is inside the
castle, so that the food is prepared and cooked on
the spot. If you want to organise something
special, this is the right place for a
banquet in renaissance style, with waiters dressed
in original costumes serving renaissance food,
music played by minstrels, magicians
and jugglers... It's possible to play music
until late at night, because here we're in the
countryside and there aren't neighbouring houses.
There is also a theatrical company, which
can recite some Boccaccio's
tales, perhaps between the courses. Then, at
night, candles and torches will create the right
atmosphere! History: the very first mention of the
Castle Il Palagio dates back to 1252, though it is
thought to be much older.
