She loved entertaining
friends, who often stayed on as paying guests. From
1920 to 1948 she kept a visiting book full of
affectionate messages from numerous members of the
European aristocracy, from musicians, from artists
as well as German and Allied generals who in turn
occupied the building during the last
war.

At every turn, a surprise:
the light coming through the windows, playing on
the Tuscan terracotta or parquet floors, on Persian
carpets; on the staircases; the carved stone
fireplaces; on vases of plants or flowers; on
antique furniture or on vaulted ceilings some
frescoed. Here a fresco, there a tabernacle or
fountain. On the first floor is the breakfast room
with its beautiful painted wooden ceiling. Outside
is the Renaissance loggia with wide views over the
gardens and Tuscan hills.
