Rofeno Abbey was founded
by Benedicine Monks in 1031. It is an architectural
treasure, situated on the top of a hill dominating
the splendid panorama of "Crete Senesi" (Siena
Clays). The Abbey is in a strategic position, close
to Asciano and approx. 20 km from Siena. Nearby
rises the important Monte Oliveto Maggiore complex,
with archives keeping valuable historic documents
regarding the Abbey.

The Romanic Chapel, dedicated to Saint
Mary and Saints James and Christopher (indicating
the importance of the Monastery), once held a
precious alter-piece by Ambrogio Lorenzetti
depicting St. Michael slaying the Dragon, a
magnificent wooden tabernacle and an ancient
Crucifix, all of which may now be admired in the
Corboli Museum in nearby Asciano.
|
|
Years of careful and
meticulous restoration returned the Abbey to its
ancient splendor: from the belfry to the Romanic
church, the cloister, the magnificent Siena
Terracotta pavements, the double order of brickwork
arches, the unusual two wells, the reception rooms
and lounges, the former stables now a library, the
monks' cells re-designed into large, comfortable
rooms. Everywhere sober elegance heightened by many
precious pieces of antique furniture. The rooms,
apartments and suites offer every comfort; the
bathrooms are finished in travertine stone from the
Siena quarries.
