If ever there was a Welsh
Rarebit with a foot in both camps, then it's this
one. Allt-yr-Ynys straddles the Wales/England
border &endash; the actual border is the River
Monnow which flows beside this country hideaway.
History is a dominant theme here. The hotel, dating
back to the mid-16th century, has a fascinating
past. And on its doorstep there's a borderland rich
in historic sites ranging from medieval castles to
picturesque 'black-and-white' Tudor villages. But
first the hotel. The Grade II listed building has
strong connections with the influential Cecil
family. There's much evidence of its original role
as their ancestral home &endash; ornamental
plasterwork ceilings, oak panelling, exposed beams,
flagstone floors, stone-tiled roof, a cider press,
walled garden and even a priest's hole.

But Allt-yr-Ynys also has its
modern touches, most notably in its covered heated
swimming pool and Jacuzzi. The public rooms are
warm and comfortable, and the restaurant has a
reputation for fine dining based on its 'modern
British' cuisine. Most of the bedrooms are located
in the grounds in traditionally styled outbuildings
which incorporate many attractive features. All
rooms are individually decorated in keeping with
Allt-yr-Ynys's historic character, and many are
exceptionally spacious. The hotel enjoys an
enviable situation. Secluded yet easy to get to,
it's an ideal centre for exploring the Brecon
Beacons National Park, Herefordshire, the Wye
Valley and Cardiff. Your hosts are Howard and
Elaine Williams.
