Foodies flock to the
'Golden Triangle' between Brecon, Abergavenny and
Hay-on-Wye, where an unprecedented number of
outstanding restaurants have sprung up in the last
15 years. To keep the competition on its toes
another has recently joined the club &endash;
Llanwenarth, a restaurant with rooms in the Usk
Valley between Abergavenny and Crickhowell.
Llanwenarth's immediate success (it was buzzing
with customers a few short weeks after opening) is
down to a straightforward, unpretentious approach
&endash; good food, a relaxed atmosphere in which
to enjoy it, and excellent value for money.
Llanwenarth's new owners, Richard Wallace and Jon
West, are experienced, highly successful
restaurateurs. They know what works. The look and
layout of the spacious Riverside restaurant creates
just the right ambience.

And the restaurant's big picture
windows make the most of the splendid views across
the Usk. Dishes on the well-chosen menu range from
simple to sophisticated, but all are defined by
careful preparation and skilful cooking. The wines,
too, are interesting and reasonably priced, and
service is spot on (the staff are engaging and well
drilled, a combination that's not easy to achieve).
The food isn't the only thing that has benefited
from Richard and Jon's arrival. The well-equipped
rooms have been upgraded with new décor and
bathroom suites, and many have balconies
overlooking that lovely river view. The location's
good too &endash; close to the Brecon Beacons and
border country
