At last Swansea has a
hotel in keeping with its status as Wales's 'City
by the Sea'. Morgans opened to great acclaim in
2002, realising the dream of local entrepreneur
Martin Morgan and his wife Louisa. Swansea's
Victorian Port Authority building has been
transformed into a stunning hotel. It has been a
subtle, discreet process into which a lot of
thought &endash; and a great deal of money &endash;
has been invested. From the outside, the fine Grade
II-listed building appears to have changed very
little. Within, Morgans oozes cutting-edge
21st-century style while retaining all the classic
features &endash; the mouldings, pillars,
staircases, stained glass and wooden floors.
Morgans is unashamedly modern &endash; but it also
pays homage to its past, avoiding that frosty
minimalism that sometimes accompanies bold new
ventures. It does what all good hotels do &endash;
it exceeds expectations.

The bedrooms are jaw-droppingly
perfect. From their Egyptian cotton sheets to the
fresh flowers and fabulous bathrooms, they are
stamped with the hallmark of high quality,
sophisticated interior design and attention to
detail. Throughout the hotel the style and quality
are the same &endash; in the classy, contemporary
lounge and champagne bars, outdoor decked courtyard
and two excellent restaurants. Morgans is a winning
mix &endash; it's a hotel for today wrapped up in a
fine building redolent of yesterday. And it's big
on personality and facilities while being small
enough to provide that reassuring personal touch.
Morgans is entirely non-smoking.
