Hotels aren't what they used to
be. Is The Newbridge a restaurant-with-rooms? Or a
gastro-pub? Or a funky new country-chic bolthole, a
contemporary interpretation of the old country inn?
Truth be told, it's all of these, a dynamic blend
of today's styles within the context of a
traditional building. We can all agree on one
thing: it's certainly new. A few years ago The
Newbridge was a humble country pub. Now, after a
clever floor-to-ceiling makeover, it's one of a
zestful new breed that is bringing freshness and
fashion to Wales's hotel and restaurant scene.
There are at least two very good reasons why you
should sample The Newbridge. First, there's the
food. Like the place itself, it's modern and
inventive yet reliant on fresh, local ingredients,
and served in a relaxed atmosphere by friendly and
efficient young staff. Then there are the superb
bedrooms.

They combine style with
sybaritic comfort (there's not the merest hint of
modish minimalism here). Warm and cosseting, they
boast high-quality features such as oak and teak
furniture, oak floors and beautiful
Tuscan-influenced marble- and limestone-tiled
bathrooms. There's a third reason too: the
location. The Newbridge overlooks a peaceful
stretch of the River Usk. It's set in beautiful,
peaceful countryside, yet is easily accessible and
only a short drive from a wealth of places to visit
&endash; Roman Caerleon, Cardiff and the Wye
Valley. For golfers, the Celtic Manor Resort is on
the doorstep. Your host at The Newbridge is Michael
Obray.
