This inn has been a convivial meeting place on Beaumaris's historic Castle Street &endash; which leads up to the gates of a famous medieval fortress &endash; for many centuries. The low-ceilinged, wooden-beamed bar displays its ancestry as a place where the stagecoaches used to stop. Horses were stabled in the courtyard by Cromwell's forces during the siege of the castle in 1645, and celebrated guests include Dr Johnson and Charles Dickens. The inn actually dates from 1472, though it was rebuilt in 1617. The emphasis here is on atmosphere, character and good food, especially fish dishes &endash; the inn is indisputably one of North Wales's top eating places. Your hosts Keith Rothwell and David Robertson have brought a fresh, modern touch to the historic inn by redesigning the restaurant in a sophisticated, bold and contemporary style in tune with the quality of the cuisine. Another feature that has won much praise is the more informal downstairs brasserie serving a wide range of meals and snacks.

The bedrooms have been completely refurbished to a very high standard while retaining their traditional character. There is much of interest in history-laden Beaumaris and the Isle of Anglesey. A few miles to the north-east there's Penmon Priory, a site of great antiquity. Head westwards and you'll soon come to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll and the National Trust mansion of Plas Newydd. The hotel is also an excellent touring centre for the mountains of the Snowdonia National Park, just a short drive away across the Menai Strait.
