The name is more than a
little misleading. There's nothing remotely olde
worlde or retrospective about this up-to-the-minute
restaurant with rooms. What was once the post
office in the picturesque village of St Fagans on
the fringes of Cardiff is now a restaurant with a
cosmopolitan, contemporary look serving
accomplished cuisine that mirrors the surroundings.
The Old Post Office is a place of today. Its fresh,
clean lines and distinct lack of clutter create a
cool, sophisticated ambience. The look extends into
the bedrooms. Forget cosy Welsh and chintz. There's
not a traditional tapestry bedspread in sight.
Instead, the Old Post Office offers rooms that are
exceptionally well equipped and thoughtfully
designed, but with clean, functional lines that are
more reminiscent of Scandinavia than South
Wales.

There's another big attraction
too. Fans of Welsh Rarebits will have noticed that
up until now we've not featured a place to stay in
Wales's capital &endash; simply because we couldn't
find one that measured up! With the Old Post
Office, guests have the best of all worlds &endash;
excellent, great-value accommodation just a few
minutes from the city centre, yet in one of Wales's
prettiest villages on the edge of the lovely Vale
of Glamorgan. And it's ironic to think that this
new breed of restaurant with rooms is located next
door to the traditional farmhouses, chapels and
rural workshops that stand in the grounds of St
Fagans' famous Museum of Welsh Life. Your host is
Kevin Tarr and the chef is Wesley Hammond.
