This is a hotel with two
entrances &endash; and two personalities. Driving
into its extensive private grounds you first arrive
at a reception area housed in a handsome,
stone-built clocktower. Keep going, for the
entrance you really want is around the corner
&endash; an arched doorway, painted deep blue and
framed by a balconied porch, that opens into the
hotel's reception area. Everything is in keeping
with appearances. The grand house, built in 1882
with a full complement of Victorian flourishes, has
dignified, tall-ceilinged public rooms that are
decorated in period style. A magnificent oak
staircase leads to some of the bedrooms, which have
been sympathetically refurbished and offer all
modern comforts. So Tre-Ysgawen is a country house
hotel in the traditional mould? Well, not quite.
The other entrance holds the answer. It's the
reception for a truly fabulous new spa.

Millions of pounds have been
spent on extending the fine old building by adding
a state-of-the-art spa that includes a large indoor
swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and
superb gymnasium. There's also a Treatment Suite
that offers everything from mud wraps to massage,
reflexology to cosmetic care (there are even
treatments especially for men!). This new addition
also houses more bedrooms plus a wine bar and
bistro that offers an informal option to the
hotel's restaurant. Tre-Ysgawen is ideal for that
pampering, relaxing few days away. Set in utterly
peaceful countryside, it's centrally located for
exploring all of Anglesey. Your hosts are Terry and
Neil Rowlands.
